SGPA to CGPA and Percentage: The Formula and the Credit-Weighting Mistake
"Add up your SGPAs and divide by the number of semesters" — that is how most students, and most calculator websites, turn SGPA into CGPA. For most transcripts, it is wrong. CGPA is a credit-weighted average, and when your semesters carry different credits (they almost always do), the simple average can miss your real CGPA by more than a tenth of a grade point — enough to cross a placement cutoff. What are SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned in one semester's courses. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the same kind of average taken across every semester of your program so far. Both usually live on a 10-point scale in India, following the UGC's Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) framework.
The word doing all the work in both definitions is credit-weighted. Every course in your scheme carries a credit value — under the CBCS framework, one credit typically corresponds to one hour of lecture or tutorial per week for a semester, or two hours of lab work. A 4-credit core course therefore counts four times as much as a 1-credit lab when your SGPA is computed. Grades work the same way at every level of the system: course grade points roll up into SGPA weighted by course credits, and SGPAs roll up into CGPA weighted by semester credits.
Where do the numbers come from? Each course grade maps to a grade point (on the common UGC CBCS letter scale, O is 10, A+ is 9, down to P at 4 and F at 0 — the exact table is your university's, and our grading system in India guide covers it in depth). One honest caveat before the math: the credit-weighted construction described here is the standard CBCS one and by far the most common, but grading is ultimately defined by each university's ordinance. A few institutions average SGPAs without weights, and some report year-wise (YGPA) instead of semester-wise. Whatever your ordinance says, and whatever your transcript prints, wins over any general formula — including ours.
SGPA vs CGPA vs GPA vs percentage
These four terms get mixed up constantly on forms and in interviews. They differ in scope and scale, not in spirit — all of them summarize academic performance as one number:

Notice the pattern down the third column: it is the same weighted average applied at bigger and bigger scopes. Once you understand it at one level, you understand the whole system — and you can immediately see why skipping the weights breaks it.
The SGPA to CGPA formula
The formula is: CGPA = Σ (SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ (semester credits). In words: multiply each semester's SGPA by the credits that semester carried, add all those products up, and divide once by the total credits you have completed.
Each product SGPA × credits is the total grade points you earned that semester — think of it as your "grade-point bank balance" for the term. Dividing the lifetime bank balance by lifetime credits gives the average quality of every credit you have ever taken. That is what CGPA measures: not the average of your semesters, but the average of your credits.
This also means the semester route and the course route give the same answer. Whether you compute CGPA from all individual course grades directly, or first collapse each semester into an SGPA and then combine SGPAs weighted by semester credits, the arithmetic is identical — as long as you use exact SGPAs. (Printed SGPAs are rounded to two decimals, which is why a hand recomputation can drift from the transcript by a hundredth or two; more on that in the FAQ.)
Two immediate consequences of the formula are worth internalizing:
- Equal credits ⇒ simple average works. If every semester carries exactly the same credits, the weights cancel and CGPA really is the plain mean of your SGPAs. This special case is why the myth survives — it is sometimes accidentally true.
- Unequal credits ⇒ simple average lies. The moment credits differ across semesters — different course loads, project semesters, electives, a lighter internship term — the simple average starts drifting from the truth, in whichever direction your light semesters lean.
Where to find your credits: each semester's grade card usually prints "credits registered/earned"; otherwise sum the C column of that semester's courses in your scheme booklet (the L-T-P-C table). Use graded credits only — audit and non-credit mandatory courses typically stay out of the average, though the exact rule is your ordinance's.
Why simple averaging is wrong
Simple averaging is wrong because it silently gives every semester the same importance, when the transcript does not. A 12-credit project semester and a 24-credit core semester are treated as equals by the simple average, even though one contributes twice the academic volume of the other. The error is systematic, not random — and in a typical engineering degree it flatters you.
Here is why the bias usually points up. In many programs, the heaviest credit loads sit in the first two years (core courses, labs, tutorials everywhere), while the final year is lighter — a project, an internship, a handful of electives. SGPAs, meanwhile, tend to travel the other way: first-year marks are often the weakest, and final-year SGPAs the strongest, when electives are chosen freely and project grading is kinder. So the simple average overweights precisely the semesters where you scored highest, and underweights the heavy early semesters where you scored lowest.
The diagram below shows the same eight-semester transcript twice. In the top strip every semester is drawn the same size — that is what the simple average "sees." In the bottom strip each semester's width is proportional to its credits — that is what the CGPA formula sees. Same SGPAs, different weights, different answer:
The gap in this example is 0.14 grade points — 8.14 versus 7.99. That looks small until you remember where cutoffs sit. A student who believes the 8.14 walks into a "CGPA 8.0 and above" eligibility screen expecting to clear it; the transcript's 7.99 says otherwise. Recruiters, postgraduate admissions, and scholarship committees read the transcript, not your mental average.
The direction of the error is not always in your favor. If your light-credit semesters happened to be your worst (a rough internship term, an overloaded exam season), the simple average will understate your CGPA instead. Either way it is the wrong number — compute the weighted version and be done with it.
Full 8-semester worked example
Meet a typical B.Tech transcript: 165 total credits spread unevenly across eight semesters, with heavy first-year loads and a light project-driven final year. Every number in this table is exact — you can re-add each column by hand:

The two computations, digit by digit:
Credit-weighted (correct): the products column sums to 168.0 + 177.6 + 177.1 + 181.7 + 178.2 + 176.4 + 147.2 + 112.8 = 1319.0 grade points, earned over 24 + 24 + 23 + 23 + 22 + 21 + 16 + 12 = 165 credits. CGPA = 1319.0 ÷ 165 = 7.9939… ≈ 7.99.
Simple average (wrong): the SGPAs sum to 7.0 + 7.4 + 7.7 + 7.9 + 8.1 + 8.4 + 9.2 + 9.4 = 65.1, and 65.1 ÷ 8 = 8.1375 ≈ 8.14.
The simple average overshoots by 0.14 because the two best semesters (9.2 and 9.4) carry only 28 of the 165 credits — about 17% of the real weight — yet the simple average hands them 2 of 8 slots, or 25%. Meanwhile the two weakest semesters (7.0 and 7.4) hold 48 credits — 29% of the real weight — but get the same 25% under simple averaging. Overweight your best terms, underweight your worst, and the number inflates.
The running-CGPA column tells a second story worth pausing on: this student improved every single semester, yet the CGPA climbed slowly — from 7.00 to only 7.99 despite two final-year semesters above 9. That is credit weighting again: by semester 7, the first 137 credits are locked in and the new semester is just 16 credits pushing against them. How to calculate your CGPA: step by step
Five minutes with your grade cards is all this takes. The procedure that matches what your university's software does:
- Collect credits and SGPAs For each completed semester, note the credits (from the grade card's "credits earned" line, or by summing the C column of your scheme booklet) and the printed SGPA. Use graded credits only — audit and zero-credit courses stay out.
- Multiply per semester Compute SGPA × credits for each semester. This is the semester's total grade points — e.g., 8.4 × 21 = 176.4.
- Add both columns Sum all the products (total grade points) and separately sum all the credits. In our example: 1319.0 and 165.
- Divide once, at the end CGPA = total grade points ÷ total credits. Do not round anything before this final division — rounding intermediate products is how hand calculations drift.
- Cross-check against your transcript A mismatch in the second decimal is almost always the university's rounding or truncation policy (or a backlog-replacement rule), not your arithmetic. If the gap is larger, ask the examination section how they compute it — and use their number everywhere official.

Target mode by hand: the SGPA you need next semester
The reverse question has a clean closed-form answer. If your CGPA is G after Cdone credits, next semester carries Cnext credits, and you want to finish the semester at target CGPA T, then:
Required SGPA = ( T × (Cdone + Cnext) − G × Cdone ) ÷ Cnext
which rearranges into a more revealing form: required SGPA = T + (T − G) × (Cdone ÷ Cnext). Read that second version carefully — it is the whole story of CGPA recovery. To move your CGPA up by a gap of (T − G), you must score the target plus that gap multiplied by the leverage ratio Cdone ÷ Cnext. Early in a degree the ratio is small and recovery is cheap; late in a degree the ratio is brutal.
Concretely: after semester 1 of our example transcript (24 credits at 7.0), reaching a 7.6 CGPA in semester 2 (24 credits) needs an SGPA of 7.6 + 0.6 × (24 ÷ 24) = 8.2 — ambitious but very doable. The same 0.6-point climb attempted with 120 credits behind you and 22 ahead needs 7.6 + 0.6 × (120 ÷ 22) ≈ 10.87 — beyond the scale. Same gap, wildly different price, purely because of accumulated weight.
Here is a full scenario table for a student at a 7.50 CGPA after 120 credits, with a 22-credit semester ahead. Each row asks for a different end-of-semester target across the resulting 142 credits:

The honest reading: from 7.50 with only 22 of 142 credits left to earn, anything past roughly 7.85 is mathematically off the table for this semester — no amount of motivation changes a weighted average. Even a perfect 10.0 lands at (7.5 × 120 + 10 × 22) ÷ 142 = 1120 ÷ 142 ≈ 7.89. Reaching 8.00 would take at least two more perfect semesters: after two 10.0 terms of 22 credits each, the CGPA becomes (900 + 440) ÷ 164 ≈ 8.17.
This is not a reason for despair; it is a reason to set targets the arithmetic can honor. Rule of thumb from the leverage formula: each 0.1 you want to add to your CGPA costs about 0.1 × (credits done ÷ next credits) extra SGPA above the target itself. With five semesters behind you and one ahead, that multiplier is roughly 5 — so "just pull it up by 0.3 this semester" usually means an SGPA about 1.5 points above where your CGPA sits now, plus the 0.3.
SGPA to percentage — and the (SGPA × 10) − 7.5 myth
The first thing to know: most forms do not want a per-semester percentage at all. Eligibility forms almost always ask for the percentage of your final CGPA, converted using whatever rule your university notifies. Convert once, at the end, from the credit-weighted CGPA — never by converting each SGPA and averaging the percentages, which stacks the weighting error on top of a conversion error.
Second: the formula (SGPA × 10) − 7.5 is scheme-specific, not universal — despite being pasted on half the calculator sites on the internet as though it were a law of nature. Algebraically it is identical to (SGPA − 0.75) × 10, the subtractive pattern that certain universities notify for certain schemes. VTU, for example, officially notifies (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 — that is, × 10 minus 7.5 — but only for its 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes, and for CGPA. Other universities notify a straight × 10 (Anna University; KTU since its 2023 amendment), and CBSE's school-level equivalence is × 9.5. If your university has a subtractive rule, it applies because your ordinance says so — not because SGPA universally converts that way.

A quick sanity check of the spread, using an 8.4 SGPA: × 10 gives 84%; × 9.5 gives 79.8%; (× 10) − 7.5 gives 76.5%. Three "official-looking" answers, 7.5 points apart. The formula is a policy choice, and only your institution gets to make it.
Mistakes to avoid
Every one of these shows up constantly in forum threads, form submissions, and — worse — in eligibility screenings:
- Simple-averaging your SGPAs. The headline mistake this whole page exists to kill. Unless every semester carries identical credits, the plain mean of SGPAs is not your CGPA.
- Converting each SGPA to a percentage and averaging those. This compounds two errors: it drops the credit weights and applies a conversion where none belongs. Convert once, from the final credit-weighted CGPA.
- Applying (× 10) − 7.5 universally. It is a scheme-specific subtractive formula some universities notify, not a general SGPA rule. Check your ordinance before subtracting anything.
- Assuming all semesters weigh the same. Project and internship semesters are often light; first-year semesters are often heavy. Look up the actual credits — the weights are the whole game.
- Forgetting how backlogs enter the math. An F is usually a 0 multiplied by the course's full credits, and replacement-after-clearing policies vary. Recompute after clearing a backlog using your university's stated rule.
- Rounding early. Round only the final CGPA, to however many decimals your university uses. Rounding each product or each SGPA first is how hand calculations drift off the transcript.
- Setting CGPA targets without the leverage math. Late in a degree, most of your CGPA is frozen. Run the target formula (or the widget above) before committing to a number in an interview, an application, or a promise to your parents.

How do you calculate CGPA from SGPA?
Multiply each semester's SGPA by that semester's credits, add up those products, and divide by the total credits: CGPA = Σ(SGPA × credits) ÷ Σ credits. For example, semesters of 24, 24 and 23 credits with SGPAs of 7.0, 7.4 and 7.7 give (168 + 177.6 + 177.1) ÷ 71 = 522.7 ÷ 71 ≈ 7.36. Only when every semester carries identical credits does this reduce to a simple average of SGPAs.
Is CGPA just the average of all my SGPAs?
Usually not. CGPA is the credit-weighted average of your semesters, so semesters with more credits count for more. The simple average only matches when every semester has exactly the same credits. In this guide's full worked example, the simple average of eight SGPAs is 8.14 while the true credit-weighted CGPA is 7.99 — a 0.14-point gap that crosses the common 8.0 cutoff. Is (SGPA × 10) − 7.5 the universal formula for SGPA to percentage?

What is a good SGPA?
There is no official threshold — it depends on your university's grading style and your goal. As a rough reading on a 10-point scale: 7+ is solid, 8+ is strong, and 9+ is excellent under most absolute grading schemes; under relative grading the same number means different things in different classes. Does first-year SGPA matter for placements?
Indirectly, but heavily. Recruiters almost always screen on CGPA, not per-semester SGPA — but first-year semesters often carry large credit loads, so they hold a large permanent share of your CGPA. In our worked example, semesters 1–2 hold 48 of 165 credits — about 29% of the final CGPA — while both final-year semesters together hold about 17%. A weak start is partly recoverable, but the math of leverage means the recovery must begin early.
What SGPA do I need next semester to reach an 8.0 CGPA?
Use required SGPA = target + (target − current CGPA) × (credits done ÷ next-semester credits). At a 7.5 CGPA after 120 credits with 22 credits next semester, an 8.0 target needs (8.0 × 142 − 7.5 × 120) ÷ 22 = 10.73 — impossible, since SGPA caps at 10. Can my CGPA go down even if I pass every subject?
Yes. Your CGPA falls whenever a semester's SGPA is below your current CGPA, regardless of passing everything. If you hold an 8.2 CGPA and score a 7.6 SGPA, the 7.6 pulls the weighted average down — by how much depends on the credit ratio between that semester and everything before it. CGPA only rises when the new SGPA beats the old CGPA.
How do backlogs affect SGPA and CGPA?
A failed course typically carries grade point 0 (F) multiplied by the course's full credits, so it drags the semester's SGPA — and through it the CGPA — down hard. When you clear the backlog, most universities substitute the new grade point in the computation, though some record the attempt on the transcript or cap the replacement grade. The exact policy is in your ordinance. Until the backlog is cleared, the zero keeps pulling on every cumulative figure.
How do I convert SGPA to percentage?
Prefer not to convert semester by semester — most forms want a percentage of the final CGPA, converted by your university's notified rule. Commonly somewhere around 160 for a four-year program — AICTE's model curriculum for undergraduate engineering is built around roughly that figure — but the exact total is set by each university's scheme and typically lands in the 150–180 range. Older schemes and some private universities differ more. Your scheme or curriculum booklet lists the per-semester and total credits; use those exact numbers, not a guess.
Where do I find my semester credits and SGPA?
Both are printed on each semester's grade card or marksheet; many universities also print cumulative credits and CGPA there. Credits per course appear in your scheme or curriculum booklet (often as L-T-P-C columns, where C is credits) and on your college ERP or results portal. Is SGPA calculated per subject or per semester?

Why doesn't my hand-calculated CGPA match my transcript exactly?
Usually rounding or policy, not your arithmetic. Universities differ on whether SGPA and CGPA are rounded or truncated and to how many decimals; whether cleared backlogs replace the original F in the computation; whether audit or non-credit courses appear; and how revaluation changes propagate. Recomputing from printed (already-rounded) SGPAs can also drift a little from the university's course-level computation. A difference in the second decimal is almost always a rounding artifact; if the gap is bigger, ask your examination section for the computation sheet.
What is YGPA?
YGPA (Yearly Grade Point Average) is the year-wise analog of SGPA: a credit-weighted average across the two semesters of one academic year, used by universities that report results annually — MAKAUT in West Bengal is the commonly cited example. The degree-level aggregate is then built from YGPAs instead of SGPAs. The weighting principle is identical — years with more credits count more — so everything in this guide transfers directly.
Is 8.5 SGPA good?
On a 10-point scale, an 8.5 SGPA is a strong semester at most institutions — comfortably above typical placement cutoffs and, if sustained, in the range where postgraduate applications are competitive. Its effect on your CGPA depends on the credits attached: an 8.5 in a heavy semester moves you more than in a light one. And if your CGPA is already above 8.5, an 8.5 semester will actually pull it down slightly.
Do internships, projects and audit courses count in CGPA?
