What is the grading system in India?
The grading system in India is a mix of two generations of rules. Modern universities follow the UGC's 10-point letter-grade scale — O, A+, A, B+, B, C, P, F — introduced nationally with the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), where each letter carries a grade point and your overall result is a credit-weighted average called CGPA. Alongside it, the older marks-based vocabulary of percentages, divisions, classes and distinction still governs school boards, many traditional universities, and nearly every eligibility form you will ever fill in.
That dual system is why Indian results are so often confusing. Your semester grade card may say "A+ in Data Structures," your degree certificate may say "First Class with Distinction," and a job portal may demand a percentage — three descriptions of the same performance, connected by rules that differ from one university to the next.
One principle explains most of the confusion, so it is worth stating up front: the UGC standardized the letters and the formulas, but not the mapping from marks to letters. Every university's academic ordinance decides what marks (or what class rank, under relative grading) earn each grade, what counts as a distinction, and what the pass mark is. Whenever this guide says "typically" or "commonly," that is the reason — and your university's ordinance is always the final authority.

The UGC 10-point letter-grade scale
The UGC's CBCS guidelines define nine grades — eight letter grades plus an absent marker — each with a fixed grade point. This table is the one genuinely standardized piece of Indian university grading:

First, the grade points are the real currency. Letters are labels; the numbers next to them are what enter every calculation. An A is not "80%" — it is 8 grade points, which will be multiplied by the course's credits and averaged into your SGPA and CGPA. Second, P is a real pass and F is a real zero. The scale is not symmetric: the gap between P (4) and F (0) is the largest jump in the table. A single F does far more damage to an SGPA than the difference between an A and an A+, which is why clearing backlogs early is nearly always the highest-value academic move available.
Third, the marks-to-letter mapping is deliberately absent. The UGC left it to each university to decide whether an O needs 90%, 85%, or a top-of-the-curve position. Some universities publish fixed marks bands in their ordinances (absolute grading); many technical institutes grade each class on its own distribution (relative grading, covered below); and hybrids of the two are common.
Who decides which marks earn which grade?
Your university's academic council or senate does, through documents usually titled "ordinances," "regulations," or "academic rules." These specify the grading method (absolute, relative, or hybrid), the pass minimums for theory and internals, the classification rules for the degree, and backlog handling. They are public documents — typically on the university website under the examinations or academics section — and reading the ten pages that apply to your program will answer questions no generic website can.

Divisions, classes and distinction
Divisions and classes are the marks-based classification layer: labels like "First Division" or "First Class with Distinction" printed on final results and asked about on forms. The thresholds below are the widely used conventions — but unlike the UGC letter table, none of these numbers is nationally standardized. Each board and university sets its own boundaries in its ordinance, and the "commonly" column is exactly that.

First division vs first class
They are the same concept in two dialects. "Division" is the vocabulary of school boards and older universities; "class" is the degree-classification vocabulary that dominates in higher education. Both conventionally draw their top line at 60%. Distinction and honours
Distinction is a performance label: cross the ordinance's threshold — commonly 70% or 75%, or a CGPA band like 7.5 or 8.0 — and the words "with distinction" appear in your classification. Some ordinances add conditions, most often that every course was cleared on the first attempt. Honours, by contrast, describes the program: a BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) with a deeper specialization, or the four-year honours degree introduced under NEP 2020. The two are independent — an honours degree without distinction and a plain degree with distinction are both perfectly possible.
Never assume distinction = 75% on a form. If an application asks whether you graduated "with distinction," the safe answer is whatever your degree certificate or transcript literally says. Claiming distinction because your marks cleared someone else's threshold is a verification failure waiting to happen.
A school-board footnote: during CBSE's CCE years, Class 10 results were themselves grades (A1–E2 bands with a CGPA), and the board's famous 9.5 multiplier existed to convert that CGPA back to marks. Credits and CBCS: how course weight works
A credit is a unit of workload that doubles as a course's weight in your average. Under the UGC's CBCS norms, one credit corresponds to one hour of lecture or tutorial per week across a semester, and lab or practical work earns one credit for every two weekly hours. A standard 4-credit theory course therefore means four teaching hours a week; a 1-credit lab means a two-hour weekly session. The Choice Based Credit System, rolled out by the UGC from 2015, is the framework that made credits the organizing unit of Indian degrees. Three of its changes matter for understanding your grade card:
- Courses became modular. Degrees are built from core courses, electives, and ability/skill courses, each tagged with credits — which is what makes choice ("choice based") and credit transfer possible at all.
- Grading became standardized. The 10-point letter table above, and the SGPA/CGPA formulas below, come from the CBCS guidelines. Any CBCS grade card in the country is readable the same way.
- Weight became explicit. A 4-credit course affects your average exactly four times as much as a 1-credit course. Where you concentrate effort now has an arithmetic answer.
A typical undergraduate semester carries roughly 20–26 credits, and engineering degrees commonly total around 160–180 credits — figures that vary by university and program, so treat them as orientation, not rules. What never varies under CBCS is the principle: credits × grade points is the quantity everything else is built from.
Why credits change your strategy
Because the weighting is explicit, two students with identical letter grades can have different SGPAs if the grades fell on different courses. An A+ in a 4-credit core course adds 36 credit points; the same A+ in a 1-credit lab adds 9. From grade points to SGPA and CGPA
SGPA and CGPA are both credit-weighted averages of grade points — SGPA over one semester, CGPA over every semester so far. The UGC's CBCS guidelines define them precisely:
SGPA = Σ(Ci × Gi) ÷ ΣCi — for each course i in the semester, multiply its credits Ci by the grade points Gi you earned, sum across courses, and divide by total credits.
CGPA = Σ(Cs × Ss) ÷ ΣCs — weight each semester's SGPA Ss by that semester's credits Cs. Both are reported to two decimal places.
Here is the whole pipeline from marks to CGPA, as your university's software runs it:
- Marks become a letter grade Each course's total (end-semester exam + internals, per the ordinance's weighting) is mapped to a letter — by fixed marks bands under absolute grading, or by class position under relative grading.
- Letters become grade points The UGC table converts each letter to its number: O → 10 down to P → 4, with F and Ab → 0. From here on, the exact marks are gone.
- Grade points are weighted by credits Each course contributes credits × grade points. This product — credit points — is the atom of the whole system.
- The semester is averaged into SGPA Total credit points ÷ total credits for the semester, to two decimals.
- Semesters are averaged into CGPA Each semester's SGPA is weighted by its credits — not averaged naively — to produce the CGPA on your transcript.
A worked semester, digit by digit
Take a 14-credit semester with five courses:

SGPA = 117 ÷ 14 = 8.36 (8.3571…, reported to two decimals). Now suppose the next semester carries 16 credits at an SGPA of 7.50 — that is 16 × 7.50 = 120 credit points. The CGPA after two semesters is (117 + 120) ÷ (14 + 16) = 237 ÷ 30 = 7.90.
Notice what the naive average would have said: (8.36 + 7.50) ÷ 2 = 7.93. Close here, because the credit totals are similar — but the gap grows with the credit imbalance, and at a placement cutoff of 7.9 versus 7.93, "close" is not good enough. Absolute vs relative grading
Absolute grading maps marks to grades with fixed cutoffs known in advance; relative grading derives the cutoffs from how the class actually performed. Both feed the same UGC letter table — they differ only in where the boundaries come from.
Under absolute grading, the ordinance publishes bands — for instance, a university might award O for 90 and above, A+ for 80–89, and so on (the bands themselves vary by university). Your grade depends only on your own marks. It is transparent and predictable, but it has a known weakness: a brutally hard paper sinks the whole class, and an easy one inflates it, because the bands do not move.
Under relative grading, the class's score distribution sets the boundaries. The most common formalization uses the class mean and standard deviation — a measure of how spread out the scores are — and places grade boundaries at fixed steps above and below the mean. Score half a standard deviation above the mean and you land a band higher than the average student, regardless of whether the paper was easy or hard. Other versions sort the scores and cut at natural gaps, or fix the fraction of the class that can receive each grade.
Why do institutes — including, in various forms, most IITs and NITs — use it? Because it decouples grades from paper difficulty and examiner strictness, which otherwise vary wildly between courses and years. The trade-offs are real, though: your grade now depends on your cohort, so a strong batch raises the bar for everyone; small classes make the statistics unreliable (which is why ordinances often exempt them); and honest comparisons of CGPAs across institutes with different grading philosophies get harder. Qualitatively, relative grading tends to compress grades toward the middle of the scale in strong cohorts — the same student who would sweep O grades under generous absolute bands may earn A and A+ grades on a curve simply because many classmates performed nearly as well.
Most real systems are hybrids: a relative scheme with absolute floors (for example, a rule that no one below the pass mark can receive a passing grade however the curve falls, or that certain minimum marks guarantee at least a particular grade). Instructors frequently retain discretion to adjust boundaries at grade-gap points. The exact recipe is institute-, department-, and often instructor-specific — which is precisely why the worked example below is labeled illustrative.
Relative grading worked example: cutting the bell curve
Here is one complete, concrete relative-grading computation. Every number in this section is illustrative — it shows the method, not any particular institute's rule.
Suppose 100 students take an exam. The instructor computes two statistics from the raw scores: the mean (μ), the class average, comes out to 62 marks; and the standard deviation (σ), which measures how spread out the scores are, comes out to 12 marks. In a roughly bell-shaped distribution, about two-thirds of students score within one σ of the mean — here, between 50 and 74.
The grading scheme in this example places a grade boundary every half standard deviation. The arithmetic:
- μ + 1.5σ = 62 + 18 = 80 → O for scores above 80
- μ + 1.0σ = 62 + 12 = 74 → A+ for 74–80
- μ + 0.5σ = 62 + 6 = 68 → A for 68–74
- μ = 62 → B+ for 62–68
- μ − 0.5σ = 62 − 6 = 56 → B for 56–62
- μ − 1.0σ = 62 − 12 = 50 → C for 50–56
- μ − 1.5σ = 62 − 18 = 44 → P for 44–50, F below 44
Now the punchline. A student named Meera scores 65 in this class: 65 falls between the mean (62) and μ + 0.5σ (68), so she earns a B+ — 7 grade points. Her friend Dev scores the same 65 in a different course where the paper was much harder: there the mean is 48 with σ = 10, so the O boundary sits at μ + 1.5σ = 48 + 15 = 63. Dev's 65 clears it — the same marks earn him an O and 10 grade points.
The lesson of the curve: under relative grading, marks have no absolute meaning — 65/100 was a middling script in the first class and one of the best in the second. Two honest caveats complete the picture. Real distributions are rarely perfect bells — a bimodal class (one cluster that understood the course, one that did not) breaks tidy σ-step schemes, which is why instructors often eyeball the sorted scores for natural gaps before finalizing boundaries. And relative schemes almost always run inside guardrails: an absolute pass floor below which no curve can rescue a script, and senate-level review of unusual grade distributions.
Indian grades vs US letter grades
The Indian 10-point system and the US 4.0 system are different machines, not different units of the same quantity — which is why no honest one-line formula converts between them. The standard US plus/minus scale looks like this (marks bands are the common convention but vary school to school):

Three structural differences make naive comparison misleading:
- The marks cultures are different. A 68% aggregate can be a genuinely strong result in many Indian university programs, where papers are marked strictly and 90%+ aggregates are rare outside school boards. On a typical US school scale, 68% reads as a D. Comparing raw percentages across the two systems compares nothing meaningful.
- The scales compress differently. India's scale spends six letters (O to C) on passing performance above the minimum, while the US spends most of its resolution between A and C. Dividing a 10-point CGPA by 2.5 maps an excellent 8.0 to a "3.2" that looks mediocre in a US context — a self-inflicted wound on applications.

Mistakes to avoid
Most grading-system damage is self-inflicted paperwork error, not academic failure. The recurring ones:
- Reading grade points as marks ÷ 10. An 8 (A grade) does not mean you scored 80%. Under relative grading it may correspond to far lower — or higher — raw marks. Grade points measure position on the grading scale, nothing else.
- Averaging SGPAs without credits. CGPA is credit-weighted. If your semesters carry different credit totals, the naive average is simply a different (wrong) number — recompute it properly before you put it on a form.

- Assuming distinction and division thresholds are universal. They are ordinance-specific. Report the classification printed on your certificate, and when a form asks for a threshold-based answer, cite your university's rule.
- Dividing CGPA by 2.5 for a US GPA. The scales do not map linearly, and evaluators recompute course by course. Label any linear number you provide as an estimate.
- Comparing CGPAs across institutes as if they were marks. A 7.8 under strict relative grading and a 7.8 under generous absolute bands are different achievements. Recruiters familiar with Indian institutes know this; forms mostly do not.
- Letting an F sit. With 0 grade points multiplied by the course's full credits, an uncleared backlog is the heaviest weight your CGPA carries, and clearing it is usually the fastest CGPA repair available. Can 65 marks be an A grade under relative grading?

What is the Ab grade?
