How the final grade is worked out
Your overall grade is a weighted mix: the work you've already done, plus the final. Rearranging that for the score you still need gives:
- 1Take your current grade and multiply it by the part of your grade that isn't the final (1 − weight).
- 2Subtract that from your target.
- 3Divide by the final's weight to get the score you need on the final.
Needed on final = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) / Weight
Worked example. Current grade 78%, final worth 40% (0.4), target 80%: (80 − 78 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = (80 − 46.8) ÷ 0.4 = 33.2 ÷ 0.4 = 83% needed on the final. If the answer is above 100%, the target isn't reachable; if it's 0 or below, you've already secured it.

How do I calculate what I need on the final exam?
Use Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight, where Weight is the final's share as a fraction. Example: current 78%, final worth 40% (0.4), target 80% → (80 − 78 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 83% needed.
What if it says I need more than 100%?
Your target isn't reachable even with a perfect final. The calculator also shows the maximum overall grade you can still finish with, so you know your best case and can set a realistic target.
What if it says I need 0%?
You've already secured your target — even a zero on the final keeps you at or above the grade you want. You can aim higher, or breathe easy.
Why does the final's weight matter so much?
The bigger the final's weight, the more it swings your overall grade. A final worth 50% moves your grade far more than one worth 15%, so the same target can need a very different score.
