How to work out your safe bunks

The maths is simple, but it changes after every class — which is why most students recalculate it constantly. Here's the exact method this calculator uses.

attendance % = attended / total × 100
safe bunks = floor( attended / 0.75 − total )
classes needed = ceil( (0.75 × total − attended) / (1 − 0.75) )
Worked example. You've attended 42 of 50 classes → 84%. Safe bunks = 42 ÷ 0.75 − 50 = 56 − 50 = 6. You can miss 6 more classes and land at exactly 75%. Miss a 7th and you drop below.

The 75% attendance rule, briefly

Most colleges in India follow UGC/AICTE guidance requiring 75% attendance to sit the semester-end exam — usually calculated per subject, not just overall. Fall short and your name goes on the defaulter list.

Many institutions allow 65–74% to be condoned with a valid reason (often medical) and a condonation fee. Below 65% there's usually no fine option — you can be detained and made to re-register for the subject. Rules vary by college, so treat your own handbook as final.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my attendance percentage?
Attendance percentage = (classes attended ÷ total classes held) × 100. For example, 42 attended out of 50 held is 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%.
How many classes can I bunk and still keep 75%?
Safe bunks = (classes attended ÷ 0.75) − total classes held, rounded down. If you've attended 42 of 50 classes, you can miss up to 6 more and stay at exactly 75%.
What happens if my attendance drops below 75%?
Most colleges in India follow UGC/AICTE rules requiring 75% to sit the exam. Below 75% you may be placed on the defaulter list. Many colleges allow 65–74% with a condonation fee and valid reason; below 65% you can be detained and made to repeat the subject.
How do I recover my attendance if it's low?
Attend every remaining class. Classes needed = (required% × total − attended) ÷ (1 − required%), rounded up. The calculator computes this exact number for you above.
Is this calculator free?
